Format

Individual Rounds

  • Individual Theme Round: The Individual Theme Round is a 45-minute, 8-problem round featuring a theme. Problems can be and are drawn from all high school mathematics subjects.

  • Individual Relay Round: The Individual Relay Round is a 45-minute, 16-problem round. There are 4 sets with 4 problems each; within each set, successive problems depend on the solution of the previous. 

 

Team Rounds

  • Team General Round: The Team General Round is a 45-minute, 8-problem round. The team collaborates on 8 unrelated problems.

  • Team Guts Round: The Team Guts Round is a 60-minute, 21-problem round of varying difficulties and point values. The problems are divided into sets of 3. Each team will have a runner who brings problem sets from the scoring tables and drops off the team’s answers for each set there. The point value for each problem increases between each set.

  • There are two individual rounds and each individual can score a total of 160 points.

    • Each problem in the Individual Theme Round is worth 10 points for a total of 80 points

    • Each problem in the Individual Relay Round is worth 5 points for a total of 80 points 

  • There are two team rounds that account for a total of 640 points.

    • In the Team General Round, each problem is worth 30 points for a total of 240 points.

    • In the Team Guts Round, problems are weighed by set (6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 points per problem per set of three) for a total of 240 points.

  • Team sweepstakes refers to the aggregate scores of the teams from individual and team rounds and is used to determine the final team rankings. A total of 1120 points is available. 

    • Individual round scores account for 640 points (160 points per individual × top four individuals per team).

    • The team rounds account for 240 points each for 480 points.
